Member Welcome: Laila-Rose Hudson
On April 12, 2018 the Upsilon Mu chapter at the University of Alabama, Birmingham inducted eight new members as part of the department’s honors convocation. Among those recognized was senior Laila-Rose Hudson.
When looking for a major political science stood out for her. “I have been interested in politics for as long as I can remember,” said Hudson, “and I chose chose political science as a major because I thought that it would be a good first step towards law school.” And that is a key part of her plans. Asked what is next, she commented, “after graduation, I will either be completing two years with Teach for America or I will be attending Emory Law School.”
This journey toward law school is “motivated by a passion to create major legislative reforms regarding the treatment of children in foster systems domestically and abroad.” Hudson spent much of her youth in the foster system and she says that studying political science has helped her understand the whys and hows of reaching her goals.
The faculty in the department at UAB have high hopes for Laila-Rose Hudson. She was voted the Most Outstanding Political Science student, an award she was presented at the departmental reception. Professor Renato Corbetta, faculty advisor for the chapter at UAB, noted that Hudson “has overcome considerable odds to become the outstanding scholar she is today. She has an incredibly inquisitive mind and sharp analytical skills, combined with a considerable ability to think theoretically and engage in empirical research. She has excelled academically in all subfields of Political Science, from Political Theory to International Politics.”
Congratulations to Laila-Rose and all the new members of Pi Sigma Alpha from UAB.
